Energy and Information Fluxes at Upper Ocean Density Fronts

چکیده
We present large eddy simulations of a midlatitude open ocean front using modified state-of-the-art computational fluid dynamics code. investigate the energy and information fluxes at submesoscale/small-scale range in absence any atmospheric forcing. find submesoscale conditions (Ro∼1, Ri∼1) near surface within baroclinic structures, related to partially imbalanced frontogenetic activity. Near surface, show significant scale coupling on scales larger than ∼103 (m). This is manifested as strong direct cascade intense mutual communication between scales, where latter evaluated an estimator based Mutual Information Theory. At smaller (m), results near-zero flux; however, this range, still shows values corresponding with level them. fact motivates investigation into nature self-organized turbulent motion weak energetic but inquire existence synchronization or functional relationships emphasis eventual underlying nonlocal processes.

Enhanced turbulence and energy dissipation at ocean fronts.
The ocean surface boundary layer mediates air-sea exchange. In the classical paradigm and in current climate models, its turbulence is driven by atmospheric forcing. Observations at a 1-kilometer-wide front within the Kuroshio Current indicate that the rate of energy dissipation within the boundary layer is enhanced by one to two orders of magnitude, suggesting that the front, rather than the a...
متن کاملEstimating Internal Wave Energy Fluxes in the Ocean
Energy flux is a fundamental quantity for understanding internal wave generation, propagation, and dissipation. In this paper, the estimation of internal wave energy fluxes u p from ocean observations that may be sparse in either time or depth are considered. Sampling must be sufficient in depth to allow for the estimation of the internal wave–induced pressure anomaly p using the hydrostatic ba...
متن کاملBuoyancy and Wind-Driven Convection at Mixed Layer Density Fronts
In this study, the influence of a geostrophically balanced horizontal density gradient on turbulent convection in the ocean is examined using numerical simulations and a theoretical scaling analysis. Starting with uniform horizontal and vertical buoyancy gradients, convection is driven by imposing a heat loss or a destabilizing wind stress at the upper boundary, and a turbulent layer soon devel...
متن کاملSediment Transport at Density Fronts in Shallow Water
Our research approach combines advanced observational and modeling techniques. In the field, we will measure velocity and suspended sediment at high resolution (~ few cm) in shallow flows, tracking the evolution of the salinity front through the tidal cycle. The instrumentation will incorporate an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) to measure currents and a profiling conductivitytemperatu...
متن کاملSalinity fronts in the tropical Pacific Ocean
This study delineates the salinity fronts (SF) across the tropical Pacific, and describes their variability and regional dynamical significance using Aquarius satellite observations. From the monthly maps of the SF, we find that the SF in the tropical Pacific are (1) usually observed around the boundaries of the fresh pool under the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), (2) stronger in boreal ...
